The Science of Gambling Distortions: Why Chasing Losses Is a Brain Bug, Not a Character Flaw
"I just need one more hand to get it back" feels like a rational plan. Cognitive science tells a more precise story: chasing losses runs on at least two well-documented biases working in tandem — the gambler's fallacy (the belief that past outcomes shift the odds of future ones) and the illusion of control (believing personal skill can tilt random outcomes) — amplified by loss aversion, which makes a £100 loss sting roughly twice as much as a £100 gain feels good. None of that makes gambling harm less real. It does mean the old script — 'you just lack willpower' — misses the mechanism almost entirely.
