Cognitive science tells a more precise story: chasing losses runs on at least two well-documented biases working in tandem — the gambler's fallacy (the belief that past outcomes shift the odds of future ones) and the illusion of control (believing personal skill can tilt random outcomes) — amplified by loss aversion, which makes a £100 loss sting roughly twice as much as a £100 gain feels good.
