The Science of Adult Friendship and Loneliness: Why the Signal Isn't a Verdict
The story loneliness tells you — that something is wrong with you, that people don't really like you, that friendship should just happen — doesn't match fifty years of data. Research describes loneliness as an evolved signal, like hunger, not a character defect; shows that people systematically like us more than we think after conversations; and finds that adult friendship is largely a dosage problem — roughly 50 shared hours to casual friend, more than 200 to close.
