The Real Job Script

SURFACE BEHAVIOR

  • You over-explain what you do at family dinners to preempt the 'but what's your real job?' follow-up.
  • A former colleague's promotion announcement makes your solo work feel like a consolation prize.
  • You pad your LinkedIn title with words like 'consultant' to sound more legible to people who weren't going to understand anyway.

THE HIDDEN RULE

“Without a job title, an office, or a payslip, it doesn’t count.” Social legitimacy in work is still largely anchored to employer-branded identity — and freelancers lack all three markers. The script recruits family questions, peer comparisons, and the freelancer’s own internalized doubt to produce a verdict: this isn’t real until someone else’s logo is on it.

INSTALL MECHANISM

The Feast-Famine Anxiety Loop

The pattern where unpredictable income makes the nervous system react to every slow month as a crisis, even when the yearly average would be comfortable for anyone — because volatility itself, not the total, is what the body treats as danger.

REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL

  • The clients paying my invoices think it's a real job. That's the only audit that matters.
  • A payslip is a format, not a proof of value.
  • I don't owe a convincing job title to people who weren't going to take it seriously either way.
