Passion increases investment in outcomes, which increases the psychological cost of volatile metrics.

“Obsessively checking your stats is just discipline — it's how you optimize your content strategy.”

Skinner's variable-ratio research shows that unpredictable rewards — like fluctuating like counts — produce the most compulsive checking behavior, not the most strategic thinking. Compulsive stat-checking is a behavioral signature of variable-ratio conditioning, not data-driven optimization. The checking is driven by the reinforcement schedule, not by the informational value of each check.

“Looking at successful creators for inspiration motivates you to improve.”

THE DATA

Festinger's social comparison theory, and its application by Buunk and Gibbons, shows that upward ability comparisons — comparing your output to someone significantly more successful — reliably decrease self-evaluation rather than inspire improvement. The 'inspirational' framing does not neutralize the comparison mechanism. Lup et al. (2015) found Instagram use predicted depressive symptoms specifically when users followed many high-performing strangers.
