Loneliness Hypervigilance

Loneliness hypervigilance is the automatic shift in attention toward social threat that comes with feeling socially isolated. In Cacioppo's evolutionary model, loneliness is a survival signal — and part of that signal is heightened surveillance of the social world: lonely brains differentiate social threat cues in roughly 116 milliseconds, versus about 252 in the non-lonely. The result is a perception bias that makes neutral faces, slow replies and ambiguous remarks read as rejection.

How it sounds in your head

A friend takes a day to answer a text, and the script fires: 'They're done with me.' The same delay from a colleague about a work matter wouldn't register at all — the loneliness signal is scanning for social threat and finding it in noise.
