If-Then Cue Automation

If-then cue automation is the process by which forming a specific implementation intention ('When situation X, I will do Y') heightens the mental accessibility of the situation cue, so that when it is encountered the planned behavior is triggered automatically — without deliberate effort or renewed motivation at the moment of action. Gollwitzer's 1999 theory proposes this delegated automaticity as the core mechanism explaining why if-then plans close the intention-behavior gap.

THE THOUGHT

I'm not ready yet

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

I can begin while this still feels unfinished.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

Within the next 10 minutes, write the task name on a sticky note or scrap of paper, then list three tiny start options underneath it. Circle one option and place the note where you’ll see it later.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I need to feel the urge to write before I can start.' The mechanism says otherwise: form the plan 'When I sit down with my morning coffee, I will open the document and write one sentence' — and the coffee becomes the trigger. You don't need to feel ready; the environment does the prompting for you.
