Exception Permission

Exception permission is the cognitive act of creating a situational carve-out from a standing rule — 'normally I don't smoke, but tonight is different.' Unlike deliberate rule revision, exception permissions are context-specific, emotionally triggered, and automatically decay: the same person endorses the rule again once the situation passes. Research on motivated cognition and the affect heuristic explains why these permissions feel genuine rather than strategic in the moment.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I'm not a smoker — I just need one tonight because this situation is genuinely exceptional.' The research notices the pattern: the situation is almost always genuinely exceptional from the inside, which is what makes the permission feel earned rather than manufactured.
